Alexander Farms is a family-owned sheep operation located in the beautiful Finger Lakes Wine Country of New York State.

The farm produces replacement ewes and breeding rams with the commercial sheepman in mind. The animals are raised using low-cost, low-input, low-overhead regenerative practices with an emphasis on improving the land.

The flock has been outwintered for decades. The extended grazing season often lasts through late January reducing the amount of hay needed.

When the grass runs out or the snow is too deep to graze, round bales are unrolled for the sheep where pasture improvement is needed.

The hay litter, manure, and urine left from the sheep provide nutrients and a protective cover to the soil. This helps the soil retain moisture, avoids overheating, and gives a good environment to earthworms and soil microbes.

Mob grazing is used with animals moved daily or twice daily using temporary fencing. This prevents overgrazing and gives the grass adequate rest time before returning, which leads to soil improvement. It also allows the sheep to stay ahead of the parasite cycle.
